Re: Gannett newspapers jounalists repremanded
I found this decision by Gannett reprehensible. Regardless of what you do for a living, all citizens have the right to their opinions, have the right to vote however they choose, and have the right to sign petitions.

Re: Kudos Tomahawk
We were there last weekend - North 4th looks great, and we took in "The Gap is Bridged" festivities at the park. Tomahawk has so much going for it for a small town - there's almost always something to do. I agree, Deb - Kudos Tomahawk!

Re: Voter ID Law and Recall Elections
Yes, Catfish, the electoral college does its thing in the presidential election. However, the popular vote in each state determines which candidate gets the electoral votes. So, in that sense, your vote does count. Furthermore, the electoral college has nothing to do with other any other races wheth...

Re: Voter ID Law and Recall Elections
My mom doesn't drive anymore, so she will definitely be affected by this. Also, because she has some health concerns, she has voted by absentee ballot the last few years. This law changes some of the timelines for absentee voting. I'll make sure my parents know about this, but what about others who ...

Re: School District Budget
I have to agree on the concept of making change. I saw the brightest kid I knew struggle with it once as a high-school student. My own son, who I'll admit is smart, but not THAT smart, could do it easily. It's about practice and actually "using" a skill. I had two years of high school Span...

Re: School District Budget
Did I say we don't teach them cursive, how to construct sentences, use grammar, spell correctly, and how to do mental math and math with paper and pencil? As a matter of fact, I rarely let my students use calculators, because we teach for understanding and not just finding the right answer. However,...

Old Scout - Ultimately, the job of the schools is to prepare students for the workplace. Can you think of a job nowadays where students are not required to understand and use technology? My son just started his first job that potentially could become his "career job." He works for a compan...

Re: Deer Trail Lodge or Red Arrow Lodge
Deb, Red Arrow was on the north side of Lake Alice, and Deer Trail was north not too far from Lake Nokomis, if I'm remembering correctly. They were definitely two different places. If I had to guess, the switchboard may have come from Red Arrow - it was much more fancy than most resorts in the area....

But wait, there's more... Just in his mid-20s, Brian Deschane has no college degree, very little management experience and two drunken-driving convictions. Yet he has landed an $81,500-per-year job in Gov. Scott Walker's administration overseeing environmental and regulatory matters and dozens of em...

Outrageous! However, if you check out his personal debt, you can see how he might be having some trouble making ends meet. Do we really want someone who has accumulated hundreds of thousands of dollars of personal debt working for us in Washington? Not sure if he's too good at budgeting. Now, if I w...

Re: Voter ID and the Koch Brothers???
This is a fascinating article about today's hearing proceedings from the Milwaukee Journal - Sentinel. No matter how you slice it, it sure appears there was a lot of monkey-business going on before that vote took place.

Kerry, I just want to add one more thing. Regardless of who you are, public or private employee, I don't know too many people who are just going to say, "Oh, $3000 less per year, that's not so bad. I'll just suck it up and not complain..."

Voter ID and the Koch Brothers???
Here are the things that SCARE ME about what's happening in this country. According to Rachel Maddow on MSNBC: 1. The Koch brothers are now the 4th wealthiest (combined wealth) in the WORLD. 2. Last year the Koch brothers netted $9 BILLION in personal wealth. 3. One Koch brother imitator was the onl...

Ken and I must be twins separated at birth or something - I share his views entirely. Its' downright scary to me that there are still thousands of people who cannot see this for what it is... First, it was never about the money. Weeks ago the unions conceded on all monetary issues, yet our governor ...

@Tom B. Yes, we do it for the kids. The hours at school, the hours working at home on schoolwork, taking classes and credits to further our education and maintain our license, the nights awake worrying about the kid who's having trouble in math or the one who has a suspicious bruise... But does that...

We pay 95% of their health care for life. With the bill, it still is a steal, we would pay 87%. To KrystalKlear - This is simply not true. I'd like to know where you get this information. Re: State Budget, State Workers
Please Governor Walker, tell me how our shortening the school year will help our educational system. Your plan to eliminate the mandatory 180-day student year doesn't make sense to me. Yes, I know the minutes per year will stay the same as schools can lengthen the days, but as an educator I know tha...
