Re: Living the dream

After two days of catching several accidental pike, bass and walleyes, my friend and I were able to put two musky in the boat Sunday afternoon. Not the biggest, but getting off the snide early in the season can do wonders for a guy's psyche. After throwing many different presentations across every p...

Re: Living the dream

While I have yet to boat my first musky of the 2008 season, others are having much more luck on Tomahawk area waters. The board at Chuck's Bait Shop shows some decent fish being caught in the mid-40 inch range. Hopefully by Monday I'll have a musky story and some advice to share. Many anglers were f...

Re: Information pls

LadyCuJo, We don't have a way to access past articles on our website, but we do have copies of all past papers dating back to the 1970s here at the Tomahawk Leader. If you ever want to do some searching stop by the paper and I'll help you out. I'd love to read the lazy fisherman story. Like birds of...

Re: Information pls

LadyCuJo, I haven't talked with Gene for a few months, but the last time we spoke he was doing great. I actually did an article about his cousin around this time last year for a Memorial Day story. She was hired on as a pilot for a small branch of the United States Army and was killed while test fly...

Re: Living the dream

Look for the crappies to move into the shallows this week and Memorial Day weekend as they relate to warmer forecasted weather. Actually, I've been having really good success catching these fish in deeper water on the Wisconsin River after each cold front moves through. Mixed in with plenty of walle...

Re: "North for the Fourth" tee shirts

There hasn't been a North for the Fourth T-shirt design selected yet, but from what I understand, more information will be coming available in the near future. I'll keep you abreast to any information when I receive it. I think last year the T-shirts hit the shelves sometime in June. What a nice tho...

Re: Living the dream

Great to have you aboard Patriarch5, and congratulations in advance on your move to Tomahawk! Cooler temperatures this past week kept the crappies in deeper water (8-12 feet). Last night, the air temps warmed and the fish moved in shallower (2-3 feet). I suspect the fish will be back deep if the air...

Re: Living the dream

From the walleyes and crappies to the smallmouths and pike, fishing has been fantastic in the Tomahawk area and should continue to be so for some time now. Excellent walleye catches are being reported on the Wisconsin River from State Hwy. 107 to Lake Alice. The eyes have their post-spawn feedbags o...

Re: Living the dream

Opening weekend sure was a test of will with strong winds kicking up whitecaps Saturday through Monday. Whether it was the weather, gas prices or a combination of both, their was hardly another boat on the large, clear lake I chose to spend a few days on. Not that I mind having the entire lake to my...

Re: Living the dream

Well, it's been cold and it looks like it will remain cold through opening weekend. Another cold front is expected to push through the state on Friday, so fishing conditions may remain cool in the days to follow. Several of the clear, bigger inland lakes will most likely still have ice on them this ...

Re: Living the dream

Jeff, I am pretty fortunate to live on Lake Alice and enjoy the beauties the watershed provides on a daily basis. Fishing aside, the connection I get to have with nature and all its splendor is something I think is priceless. Opening day is one week away and the good news is much of the ice is gone ...

Re: Living the dream

Jeff, Not a bad idea. I've also thought of drilling holes in the end of the handle of the pole and attaching a rope attached to a close hanger - which would hopefully catch and stop the pole from going down the hole while not affecting the hook set. I'll have to give these ideas a try when I get the...

Re: Living the dream

After the winter we've had I can actually say I've never been so happy to see rain, which it has been doing all day here in Tomahawk. Well, that and I know it will really get the crappies biting. Several boats were fishing near the County Rd. A bridge last night on Lake Alice - which hopefully they ...

Re: Living the dream

First make sure your taxes are filed, then take time to enjoy some of the fantastic fishing the returning warm weather has brought with it to the Tomahawk area. Whether through the ice or open water, perch will remain active and walleyes should begin feeding as they make their way up river to spawn....

Re: Living the dream

As I was preparing to call the walleye run officially on Tuesday morning, the weather changed and the walleyes turned off as the water temps dropped. The warmer temperatures forecasted for next week should start the walleyes moving and feeding again, however, until then, I'll be focusing my time on ...

Re: Snakeheads in Wisconsin

If I'm not correct, it has been a few years since the DNR found this snakehead on the Rock River. I haven't heard anything about it since, so hopefully the exotic hasn't started a population on the river or spread to other bodies of water. In the Northwoods boaters and anglers need to be aware of se...

Re: Living the dream

Jeff, I've never fished the Fox River near DePere, but I've seen some photos of the monster walleyes the fishery produces each spring. Sounds like you and your friend had a blast. Feel free to post pictures of any big "eyes" you catch this spring. I'd love to see some of those DePere hogs!...

Re: Living the dream

Jeff, That's a very nice idea that probably would help save some poles along the way. Plus, the cardboard also could serve to keep the holes from freezing over when it is cold outside. The only part where I could see this causing a problem is when you're pulling a crappie up with a tip-down you don'...

Re: Living the dream

I fail to find the humor in Mother Nature's April fool's joke (we received around 8 inches of wet snow in the Tomahawk area last night), but I guess area flowages need the precipitation to fill up this spring, so we'll take it. The good news is air temps are expected to warm back up over the next fe...

Re: Living the dream

Jeff, I figured the best way to explain a tip-down is to show you one on the ice. You can see in the attached photo the tip-down basically works because the jigging rod is on a swivel, so when the fish hits, the rod tip smoothly lets line down to the hole - unless the crappie crushes the bait, in wh...

Re: Living the dream

Lakes in northern Wisconsin are now in ideal condition for late winter ice fishing. Some of the landings are getting a little worn, but other than that, there's still plenty of ice and the snow base has dropped considerably over the past week due to the seasonal weather. Some are now beginning to qu...

Re: Living the dream

It isn't fantastic yet, but the crappie bite appears to be slowly turning the corner and the forecasted warm temps should only increase the action. Friday: Hi (13) Low (-19) Fished with a friend for a couple hours before dark and we were able to take home a dozen decent-sized slabs. Most were caught...
