Re: Living the dream

Jeff, I figured the best way to explain a tip-down is to show you one on the ice. You can see in the attached photo the tip-down basically works because the jigging rod is on a swivel, so when the fish hits, the rod tip smoothly lets line down to the hole - unless the crappie crushes the bait, in wh...

Re: Living the dream

Lakes in northern Wisconsin are now in ideal condition for late winter ice fishing. Some of the landings are getting a little worn, but other than that, there's still plenty of ice and the snow base has dropped considerably over the past week due to the seasonal weather. Some are now beginning to qu...

Re: 60th Anniversary of Tomahawk

The Tomahawk Historical Society is currently developing the book "Memories of Earlier Settlers." Also, local author Charles Stats is currently writing a book on William H. Bradley and his development of Tomahawk, the MT&W railroad and the industries and town it served. I think you're m...

Re: Living the dream

It isn't fantastic yet, but the crappie bite appears to be slowly turning the corner and the forecasted warm temps should only increase the action. Friday: Hi (13) Low (-19) Fished with a friend for a couple hours before dark and we were able to take home a dozen decent-sized slabs. Most were caught...

Re: Lake Alice

Yup. I wasn't able to track down any info this past weekend, so the "all ice" explanation is what I'll be telling people from now on.
I bet if they'd gotten their truck stuck as bad as I did on Lake Alice this weekend they would have given it a much different name.

Re: Lake Alice

Sorry I can't help you with this WeGotAway, but speaking from experience, I often wished I had a lake I could name after the lady to avoid the scorn of fishing late. I'll ask around at some of Lake Alice's establishments this weekend and see what I can come up with. I might not get the right answer,...

Re: Living the dream

Car alarms in a shantytown would definitely cause some commotion - I was sleeping in one of the villages just the other day. Curious if you've had the chance to try these tip-up pagers yet? Because of the price, I've been waiting to get some feedback from a few people I know who have been using them...

Re: Living the dream

I do have a couple tip-ups I purchased with the flag extensions, but they are both the round Polar style. I prefer the Polar over the Beaver Dam, but among other tip-ups, I consider these two brands by far the best on the market. Not to get off track, but a lot of the cheap tip-ups you see being sol...

Re: Living the dream

Jeff, The snow is really starting to add up, but I don't think Lincoln County received nearly as much of the white stuff as counties to south recently did - Wausau was reporting 9 inches over the past two days. Before the fresh coating, Lake Alice was covered with some big, solid drifts (three feet ...

Sturgeon spearing is the only way the fish is legally harvested from the Winnebago system throughout the year. Re: Living the dream

Typically sturgeon spearing isn't a sport of catch and release, however my spearing buddy Andy found a way to let one off the hook Saturday morning. Due to a slightly misguided spear, we were unable to bring home the estimated 100 lbs. fish he was aiming for. And as I suspect, since the season close...

If you're looking for some fun this weekend, I recommend going after crappies on the Wisconsin River flowage. The fish should be pretty active before the cold front moves in this Sunday. The best way to catch these slab crappies is by using tip-downs (available at Chuck's Bait Shop in Tomahawk) - I'...

Nice job Holly Paulson in catching this dandy 29 1/2-inch walleye from a Tomahawk fishing hole on Jan. 27. A trophy for you and motivation for the rest!

BRRRRRRRR. On Monday I was out on Lake Alice catching crappies. Now today, you couldn't promise me my limit to get me out on the lake. Last night it got down to -19 with wind chills in the -60 range, and it hasn't warmed up much since. Fortunately, it sounds like the temps are going to rebound nicel...

Re: Living the dream

Got a nice reminder of what makes the Northwoods so special while fishing walleyes on Lake Alice Sunday night. Just after dark I heard a pack of coyotes playing just down the shoreline from where I had my tip-ups set. Moments later, the howling was matched by another pack of animals from some distan...

Re: Living the dream

Vehicle travel is very limited on local lakes and reservoirs as a good deal of slush remains under several inches of snow. I checked a couple of boat landings in the Tomahawk area Dec. 31 and saw very few signs of people driving vehicles on Lake Mohawksin, Lake Alice or the Spirit. Mostly ATV and sn...

Here's a picture of a 27-inch walleye that I released on the Big Arb last weekend. Along with a mess of perch, this fish was caught fishing shallow weeds.

Re: Living the dream

Action out on the Big Arb was exceptional Saturday evening before the big storm came blasting in - we got dumped on big time here in Tomahawk. Using grubs in a weed covered bay, I was able to catch a nice mess of decent sized perch. The walleyes moved in later in the afternoon, and I caught and rele...
