The Republicans have been trying to eliminate what they view as Roosevelt's socialist program since its inception in 1935. The current plan involves tax cuts and spending on homeland security and the military. They intend to run the budget deficit up so high that curtailing social security benefits will be the only option left to save the American economy. Partial privatization will further reduce the level of benefits that the government will be responsible for.

Once benefits are reduced, public support for the program as a whole will diminish. They hope to finish off Medicare the same way.

At the same time, they are pushing good paying jobs out of the US. They want to return the country, not to the 1950s, but to the 1920s. Because wages paid to American workers will fall, the well-to-do will be able to afford servants again. If you are looking forward to having a job as a maid or a butler, this is a good plan for you.

Mr. Gentry appears to be full of it, in my humble opinion. I don't know where the "facts" that he mentioned in his post may have come from, but they are certainly from somewhere out in left field at best. I suspect that what gets most conservatives bothered about social security has more to do with what liberals have tried to make out of it than what Franklin Roosevelt intended it to be in the first place. His simple program to supplement the retirement plans of older folks so that they would be protected from inflation has been turned into one of the biggest give-aways in history. Borrowing against it to finance the public debt at interest is not really that much of a problem, but using money intended for eventual distribution to those who contributed to the fund to finance the activities of those who never put a dime into it will destroy the program eventualy. It is the Democrats and liberals who dreamed up this tactic not Republicans and conservatives.

It wasn't that many years ago I was complaining about the social security system and my mom asked me if I paid into it. I said yes to which she replied why because she hadn't and my brother hadn't and they got social security. My response was that's the problem. Today, nine years later, that's still part of the problem. I intend of accepting early SSI when I'm 62 which means I will have worked 46 years and may or may not receive it.
Another item to watch out for is a possible "needs based" program. That means if you've done well, invested wisely, etc, that you could be denied SSI based on the fact that you really don't need it and someone else could better use it. Every now and then that idea raises its ugly head.
While we're so wrapped up in the world and terrorism it's been said by none other than Alan Greenspan that the greatest threat to our nation currently is the burgeoning national debt. I'm afraid that SSI will fall prey to that monster.

As long as Congress has it's own retirement and health insurance plans, don't expect Social Security & Medicare to be fixed. Put them on the same plans as we live with & watch what would happen.
