The following is a news story in the Dec. 18 Tomahawk Leader. While we're not necessarily looking for comments regarding this specific case, we're aware of many instances in which drunk drivers are cited and then drink and drive again. It seems a particularly timely topic as we approach the holidays. What's the answer?

A 35-year-old Athens man was arrested for his seventh offense of drunk driving in Lincoln County last Monday.

Timothy M. Weiler reportedly pulled behind the squad of a Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department deputy while he was westbound on County Road Z in the town of Corning. The deputy clocked Weiler approaching at 75 mph in a 55 mph zone. Weiler then passed the squad in a no passing zone.

He was stopped by the deputy at 2:24 a.m. and arrested on the seventh offense operating while intoxicated charge and operating with a revoked license as a habitual traffic offender.

After an initial appearance in Lincoln County Circuit Court last Tuesday, a judge ordered Weiler to be held on a $2,500 signature bond.

The sheriff’s department noted that over the past several months, officers have made it a priority to remove drunk and or drugged drivers from local roadways.

As of early November, there have been 131 operating while intoxicated arrests compared to 84 arrests for the entire year of 2006. Those numbers do not include the statistics from the Merrill or Tomahawk police departments.

The members of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department also remind everyone to buckle up and drive safe over the holiday season.
