'Sitting duck'

Postby Tomahawk Leader » Sat Apr 11, 2009 2:19 pm

A Letter to the Editor in the April 7, 2009, Tomahawk Leader:

About the tragedy of young Rochelle Anderson … the crux of the whole matter is that she should never have been in a job like that in the first place. These gasoline station stores are magnets for young guys on drugs who need dope money. She was a “sitting duck.” If a twenty-five-year-old man had been in that job; he would have had a fighting good chance to defend himself.

Would that this tragedy, sad as it is, be a wake-up call to future employees: do not put a lone woman into an after dark job. Some jobs are good for women and some jobs are good for men. This job was meant for a man.

I guess that's the price to be paid for equality.

I've been curious what others would think about this. Personally, I have to completely disagree with this letter...

1st. If the security camera in the place was a real camera at the time and there had been more than one it might have acted as a deterrent.

2nd. Was there merchandise blocking the window? Could people see into the store clearly from outside?

3rd. What was security like inside? Is the counter enclosed with security glass?

4th. Would a guy have any better luck fending off an armed attacker?

This isn't exactly a common occurrence in Tomahawk and in general I think everyone should feel relatively safe there. But as a late night store there are measures that can be taken to improve security.

Would the author of the letter be any more comfortable if she had been a waitress at a cafe that was robbed and she was killed there? How about if she had simply been a customer at the gas station? Should females not be out unescorted after dark too?

My guess is Jane Lennon probably does not mind that she will never get an invitation to join Augusta National Golf Club.

I do agree with Jane and the concept that some jobs are more gender suitable.

My wife is as strong as a bull and has a temper that when it even looks like it is going to blow, I run. I would rather fight Mike Tyson in a telephone booth, with no earmuffs, then tangle with her when she gets mad.

But if I was heiring a body guard I would much rather have Mike Tyson if for no other reason the mere physical image would be much more intimidating then my five foot two inch wife.

Who do you think a robber or a mugger is going to be more likely to attack? Most of them are probably not smart enough to realize they would be much better off attacking Tyson...
