A letter in the July 21, 2009, Tomahawk Leader
The recent Wisconsin supreme court ruling on open records of public employees info, could have a very dramatic effect on those of us who work in the correctional facilities around the state, that information has been and will be used to undermine the security of our prisons and detention facilities, the use of intimidation, blackmail and threats against families of correctional employees.
These tactics are used by various gangs and other crime groups to bring contraband into prisons all over the U.S. and Wisconsin. The journalist "right to know" should never trump the citizen’s right to protect their family. I hope that when one of my fellow correctional employees has his family threatened, the editor of the Northwoods weekly that started this mess can live with himself! Oh that’s right, freedom of the press trumps my right to privacy and the safety of my family. This is from the same group that feels that sources for their exposes or stories should be protected by the reporters’ shield laws. It must be nice to have your cake and eat it too. What's worse is this is the direct result of a reporter’s witch hunt over what D.N.R. employee had his driving permit restricted in Oneida counts.
Correctional employee since 1973
