A letter in the May 25, 2010, Tomahawk Leader:

A public hearing May 27 2010.

Collins Billboard Company is coming back to Merrill to ask to reconstruct billboards higher and bigger. We are totally against building billboards higher and bigger on highway 51/39. Nothing destroys the scenic character of Lincoln County faster then billboard blight. Zoning ordinances have set billboards at a low height to protect open space. Billboards are a tax burden. The Wisconsin DOT advertising department has stated the permit fees to regulate billboards does not cover the cost to regulate billboards. In other words Wisconsin taxpayers have paid millions to regulate billboards and another fact when you have highway expansion taxpayers pay to remove billboards which runs into the millions. Come out and say NO to Giant billboards. We should support a Scenic Byways program to protect and preserve the visual character of Lincoln County’s highways. Take pride in Lincoln County’s Scenic Heritage. Along the Mississippi they have capped billboards with the help of the Great River Scenic byways program. States like Maine, Vermont, Alaska and Hawaii have banned billboards.

Please come out say NO to giant billboards. Hearing is on May 27, 10:30 a.m., Lincoln County Service Center at 801 N Sales St., Merrill, WI room 156. Directions south of Merrill High School.

Good letter. Wisconsin should go the route of other states that have respect for their life space and ban these horrible eye sores.

90% of people are caused by accidents.

From you're photo on the front page, perhaps the trees were expressing their opinion of that billboard mess on 51 south of Tomahawk. The County didn't listen to them either, but they'll be back.
