A Letter to the Editor in the July 27, 2010, Tomahawk Leader:
I am responding to a letter written by Allan Richards regarding the Lake Nokomis Protection District. It is necessary to clear up the misconception that the LNCC or the soon to be established Lake District can control water levels in Nokomis or Bridge Lake. That is under the control of WVIC based on a license issued by FERC.
There is however things that lake districts can do. In today's environment, aquatic invasive species control is placed at the top of the list (Eurasian Milfoil, Curly Leaf Pondweed, etc.). Someone has to raise the money, write the grants and arrange for someone to do the actual control treatments. Although the DNR administers a fund set up by the legislature to pay a portion of Eurasian Milfoil control, grants are not guaranteed. It is also important to note that although the DNR does provide some help, lake organizations are principally responsible for taking the lead in the protection of their own bodies of water.
Mr. Richards tries to imply that there will be lake district meetings held in the middle of the week, so that not many people can attend. By statute the annual meeting must be held each year between May 22 and Sept. 8, unless another date is specified at the annual meeting, The LNCC has never held a meeting on any day except a Saturday. Also, all property owners and residents that are in the district are allowed to vote. This isn’t true with town and village property owners.
Mr. Richards also implies that a lot of people don’t think that a district is a good idea. Well a lot more think it is. Currently there are more than 51% that have signed up in favor of a lake district. The committee feels that they want to give everyone a chance to support this worthwhile endeavor.
It is true that it will increase taxes. How much is decided at the annual meeting. But for many years a few have been doing the work and paying for the many. It is time for everyone to contribute their fair share – even it is only financially. Actually, those of us that have contributed in the past will probably pay less and it will be tax deductible.
