This letter was in the March 26, 2013, Tomahawk Leader:

(Editor’s note: This came via Sharon Karow, a genealogist in the Merrill area who teaches classes and is involved with the North Pines Genealogy Group.)

My name is Antra Celmins, and I'm a Canadian-based genealogist focused on Latvian genealogy. I am also a board member of the Latvians Abroad Museum and Research Centre, a museum about Latvian emigration and lives of emigrants in their new homes, located in Rīga, Latvia. If interested, my personal website is and the museum website can be see at (only in Latvian, though you can view one of our online exhibitions, "Latvian Footprints in the World" in English here:

I am writing to you today regarding the Latvian community of the late 1800s and early 1900s that was present in the Gleason area, Lincoln County, Wisconsin. We are currently researching this period of Latvian emigration and seeking to make contact with any descendants of these early Latvian settlers (we have had some, as seen in the "Latvian Footprints in the World" exhibition, but it has been fairly limited thus far), as well as learn more about their community (old photographs are of particular interest). I was hoping you would be able to tell your members about this project, and if any of them have Latvian roots, then they can get in touch and we can go from there.

You can direct your members and anyone else who might be interested to this blog entry of mine: ... -latvians/.
I will be visiting the Gleason area sometime in the spring, so if your library resources include anything that could be of interest, then let me know and I will make an appointment to view them when my travel arrangements are in place.

Thank you for your attention,
Antra Celmins
