Spread smiles …

A Letter to the Editor in the Aug. 8, 2006, Tomahawk Leader:

To the Editor:

The second week in August is National Smile Week. For those who would like to help spread a few smiles during this special week – or any time, for that matter – I want to tell you about a group that is devoted to doing just that.

For the volunteer members of the Hugs and Hope Foundation for Sick Children, every week of the year is Smile Week. Now over 2,800 partners strong, the group delivers cheer to suffering children by sending thousands of pieces of “happy mail” each month. Anyone who has a heart for sick kids and wants to make a difference one smile at a time may join the efforts of the Hugs and Hope Foundation. All it takes is the price of a postage stamp.

To read stories of children who could use a smile, log onto the group’s web site at www.hugsandhope.org. You’ll read about children who are battling for their lives and have little to smile about. A cheery card from you could make a child’s day.
The Hugs and Hope Foundation began six years ago. Our combined efforts add up to huge benefits for these kids who eagerly look forward to each day’s mail. What began as a hobby with one web page has now become a web site with hundreds of pages, sharing stories, photos and mailing addresses for children who register with the club hoping to make new friends.
Anyone who would like to become a hope-builder and cheer-giver is welcome to join the efforts of the Hugs and Hope Foundation by simply visiting the web site, choosing a child to write to, and mailing a card. Though the group’s mission is to put smiles on the faces of children, getting involved is sure to put a smile on your face as well. During Smile Week, share one of yours with a sick child!
