A letter in the 10-17-06 Tomahawk Leader

Dear Kathy:

As of this date I just received the Leader of Sept. 26 reading about the 120-year celebration of Tomahawk, my hometown.
The bank heist brought back memories, inasmuch as I did play a small part in the robbery.

In 1932, I was 11 years old selling newspapers at the bank stop sign when the robbers car (unknown to me) stopped at the corner. I approached the car attempting to sell a paper. The man sitting in the passenger side said very abruptly, “Kid get away from this car.” I walked back on the sidewalk and sat in the windowsill of the bank until the car went around the corner.
A few minutes later I heard gunshots. At the same time, I saw Louie Hildebrand (spelling?) who was coming across the street from the hotel coffee shop, dash back toward the hotel.
Suddenly, I saw a car, apparently the robber’s car speeding around the corner going south. I don’t recall if anyone was pursuing it, inasmuch as that is a busy intersection.
Later, I understand that one or two bullets was lodged in the hotel wall across the street.

In regard to any details, identification of robbers, type car, etc, no help that was 74 years ago, mercy. In fact, I did not know how much money was stolen until I read it in this September paper.

I closing I regret that I cannot attend the celebration.

I do enjoy receiving your newspaper, although, I get two at a time occasionally.
Take care; stay healthy.

Sincerely,

James Nelson
