A letter in the March 20 Tomahawk Leader:

In the early morning hours of February 8, 2007, flames
destroyed the home of John and Judy Squires. That disastrous morning, as Judy attended John, undergoing minor, outpatient surgery in Rhinelander, the fire department arrived on the scene. Though their response was swift, much of the Squires’ home, an ancestral farmhouse built by Judy’s grandfather near the Spirit Flowage, was consumed. And its many contents, such as irreplaceable photographs, the family’s furniture and other personal property, were simply unsalvageable; totally destroyed by fire, smoke or water from the firemen’s hoses.

Fortunately, on this cold, Thursday morning, the couple was spared their most precious possessions: the lives of their three children, who were home, just about to begin their day, at the time of the fire. Regrettably, everything else was a complete loss.

As in many cases, home-owners insurance can do only so much to replace that which is lost during an ill-fated event like this. And now, as might be expected from a close-knit community, the Squires’ friends and loved ones are holding a benefit, in their honor, to help them begin the long process of rebuilding their home and lives.

On Saturday, March 24, at Somo Beach Resort in Tomahawk, friends and community members will gather to raise money for the Squires. For a $10 cover charge, guests will enjoy free hors d'oeuvres and the acoustic rock and country music entertainment of Roo Rundle, a local favorite. $2.00 drink specials will include: 16 ounce mirco-brewed beer from the Tyranena Brewing Company of Lake Mills, Blue Margaritas and Coconut Rum and Pineapple mixers.

A Silent Auction, with all proceeds benefiting the Squires, will also be held that evening. Auction items include: a 10” Jiffy power auger, a 1?2 day guide service by Julio, a leather and wool jacket, a children’s bicycle, a street surfer, unique wind chimes, iron artwork, hand-painted saw blades, dinner packages, 10K gold earrings, a Gruen watch, a handmade quilt, fishing equipment and many more items.

For more information on the Squires Fire Benefit or to make a donation, either monetary or for the Silent Auction, please contact Teresa McGinnis at 715-453-2306 of Somo Beach Resort. For those that already donated or are planning to attend, your graciousness is more
than appreciated!
