Helping fellow students …

Postby Tomahawk Leader » Mon Mar 13, 2006 3:47 pm

A letter in the March 14 Tomahawk Leader:

To the Editor:

It has not been six months since the hurricanes destroyed much of the educational system in and around Kiln, Miss. The students and staff at the Tomahawk School District have connected with the county school system that includes the students from Kiln. While a good deal of progress has been made, much remains to be completed. Because the storm destroyed much of the tax base, progress has been slowed.

Several of their elementary schools were destroyed. Classes are being conducted in trailers. Conditions continue to be difficult. Even small items such as the sack lunches must be trucked in for the students. While the middle school was not destroyed, a good deal of equipment used in their programs had to left behind, and it was destroyed. This was the fate of the band program. Nearly all of their equipment was destroyed by water. District priorities prevent a complete replacement of the band equipment.

The students of Tomahawk’s band program have scheduled a performance on March 21 (at 8 p.m. in the district auditorium). At that performance, a free-will offering will be taken. All of the money collected will go toward helping restore the band program at the middle school. I encourage attendance at our concert.

Our students are also concerning themselves with the issue of prom. Without some outside help, there might not be a prom for the Kiln students. While this might seem like a strange concern, our students do not believe their counterparts should have to give up the “extras” because of these storms. Recently we all had the opportunity to witness the celebration of Mardi Gras in New Orleans, La. It was not as grand as past celebrations, but it lifted spirits and made a statement about the determination of the folks living in the storm-damaged area. This year’s prom will not be the event the students experienced prior to the storms, but it will provide a welcome break for students who spend their days dealing with some extreme difficulties.

Perhaps there are members of the community who won’t be able to attend our band program, but value the contribution music makes to the total education program. We would be happy to pass along any contributions given in support of our band’s efforts. Perhaps there are community members who have fond memories of their prom experience and wish to contribute to that effort. Anyone who wishes to contribute to either of these projects may do so by sending that contribution to the Tomahawk High School office. We will gladly pass those funds along to the students in Kiln, Miss. We appreciate your support of our efforts.
