A letter in the July 31 Tomahawk Leader:
To the Editor:
If the government health care plan that Senate Democrats are proposing, and Sen. Breske is promoting, is so great why are they exempting the teachers union from participating?
From personal experience ... quite a few years ago the “cadillac” health care plan I participated in offered free emergency room visits. That didn't last long because people started taking their kids to the emergency room after work instead of to the doctor during the day. Kids with sore throats and other minor ailments were diverting emergency room services. Too many people were spending insurance company and taxpayers money instead of their own. When that benefit was changed to $25 instead of being free, the abuse abruptly stopped. When it's your own money you use it wisely.
Another fatal flaw of Sen. Breske's health plan is the welfare magnet affect. Remember 20 years ago when people were coming to Wisconsin because of our very generous welfare benefits? The same thing will happen with the government run health care plan. The uninsured from other states are going to come here for their health care. It won't be long before waiting lines are the norm and health care will be rationed by the state health care board.
Sen. Breske, we do not want a government-run health plan that makes us the highest taxed state in the country, that promotes foolish spending and causes our own health care to be limited.
