A Letter to the Editor in the Nov. 27 Tomahawk Leader:
Letter to the Editor:
Madison, Merrill needs another award in progressive thinking.
In June 2006 the Merrill Area Board of Education closed Scott Elementary School – estimated savings $250,000. Shortly thereafter the Merrill Area Board sold the Scott School for $55,100. In June 2007 the Merrill Area Board closed the Midway Elementary School – estimated savings $250,000.
On Jan. 24, 2007, five Merrill Area Board members voted to start what is now the Merrill Adult Diploma Academy for a two year run (by contract with the Merrill Area Board of Education). Estimated costs for two years (not including those monies donated by F&M Enterprises) is $500,000. So the Merrill Area Board displaced 159 five to nine year olds and 12 teachers for 13 17 to 20 year olds and one principal, one teacher and one secretary and saved about $55,000 in the process. No wonder so many voters in the Merrill area are absolutely amazed at our school board.
