A letter in the April 17 Tomahawk Leader:
I wonder how many of your readers are disenchanted, to say it politely, with the way political campaigns are conducted. I believe reforms are absolutely necessary. The campaigns start too early, as of now, it is one and one-quarter years before the elections, and the candidates spend too much money. The candidates spend a lot of time negatively smearing their opponents. It would be more fitting for each to state their platform of how they would try to enrich the citizens’ way of life with sensible legislation. The money spent on these ridiculous campaigns is sinful. If the reform was enforced to allow campaigning for only three months the money saved could eliminate a large portion of the national debt.
I suggest that we, as grassroots tax paying citizens, start a petition for major campaign reform. I urge all of you to contact your congressmen and representatives to work diligently on this matter.
It is pathetic that only the wealthy or influential can run for office. There are many brilliant people who are very qualified but do not have the resources to pursue public office.
Let’s put some teeth in campaign reform legislation. … the country will be far better for our efforts.
