Letter to Editor in the Tomahawk Leader Oct. 11, 2005, issue:

To the Editor:

This summer Gov. Doyle vetoed a small increase of 1.4 percent to nursing homes for seniors on medical assistance. He followed that by refusing pharmacists a nominal increase for filling prescriptions for seniors on medical assistance.

As a result of Doyle's vetoes, seniors throughout the state are finding that nursing homes can no longer afford to care for patients on medical assistance and pharmacists can no longer afford to accept medical assistance claims because their costs exceed the reimbursement rate.

The legislature attempted to override Doyle's vetoes, but in both cases fell a vote or two short of providing assistance for some of our state's most vulnerable citizens.

Among the senators siding with Doyle was Roger Breske. Why, Roger Breske, are you not supporting our nursing homes? Why, Roger Breske, are you not helping our seniors to get affordable prescriptions from our local pharmacies?

In Chippewa Falls a nursing home with over 100 patients is closing after the first of the year. Homme Home in Wittenberg has announced staff reductions. Local pharmacists can no longer fill medical assistance claims. And the list goes on. Why Sen. Breske are you voting against helping people who are on medical assistance?

Sincerely,

Bob Koth
Tomahawk

I can remember when Doyle and Breskie ran for office. Older folks voted for them because the "democrats are the only ones for the senior citizen". It isn't the party, it is the person. People need to quit voting party lines and force the people who choose to run for political office to stand by their promises. Until then we are stuck with the promisers and not the will get it done politicians.
