Letter Printed in the 9/12/06 Tomahawk Leader:

To the Editor:

This September, I will join 10,000 cancer advocates on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., for the American Cancer Society Action Network’s “Celebration on the Hill,” asking federal lawmakers to make cancer a national policy priority.

The effort started on Aug. 3 when a group of us met with Doug Hill from Cong. Dave Obey’s office in Wausau, to ask that Cong. Obey join the fight against cancer and sign the Congressional Cancer Promise – recommitting the federal government to its goal of eliminating death and suffering from cancer by 2015.
The timing of this effort has never been more critical. After historic reports of first-time drops in cancer deaths, the White House and Congress have begun freezing or reducing the budgets of the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These cuts undermine families struggling with cancer and threaten to reverse field in a war we’re just starting to win.
If made, these cuts will put the squeeze on efforts to get uninsured and underinsured women critical examinations that can detect breast and cervical cancer at their earliest and most curable stages. Other cancer patients depend on research for progress and the hope of survival. These cuts are shortsighted and I hope we can count on Cong. Obey to support the fight against cancer.

Sincerely,
Scott Doerr
Merrill
