A letter in the March 14 Tomahawk Leader

To the Editor:

Hey seniors – looking for an interesting week?

I would like to encourage any senior in our area to contact the Commission on Aging in Lincoln County to see if you can qualify for this program. I have had the pleasure of being a recipient of a scholarship to attend one of these programs in Madison. If you are at all interested or just plain curious about our state issues, our legislators and Madison capital functions, this one experience would be a great asset for you. Even if you don’t intend to get involved in any local or other government issue, you will have a valuable experience just being in this program, hearing the top department heads explain their departments’ operations and get the most recent and upcoming trends. The Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups hosts another workshop for “Graduates” once you have attended this first session usually every other year. The only expense to you is the trip down. There usually are others coming from our northern region to be able to pool rides. You don’t need any other transportation while you are there. You stay right across from the capitol and within walking distances. There is handicap accessibility.

Again, if you have any interest in how our legislature functions, an interest in touring our beautiful capitol building, would like to see how our Wisconsin Supreme Court handles cases (you are guests invited to sit in), get firsthand information about the changes to Med D and many other issues affecting us here in the north, why not check out this program. Full scholarships might still be available. You will be part of a small group as guests of the Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Group hosted in the capitol. Oh, the special supper outings are worth it too!

A thankful recipient of a scholarship from previous years,
Lin Kenworthy
Tomahawk

(Editor’s Note: This letter is about the Wisconsin Senior Statesmanship Program, a unique program that educates older people on the legislative process at the state level of government, sponsored by the Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups (CWAG) – a statewide, senior advocacy organization – and the Wisconsin Association of Area Agencies on Aging. Older people learn about and participate in the legislative process through first-hand contact with their state representatives. The four-day training – April 24-27 in Madison – provides the opportunity for participants to sit in on legislative floor sessions, attend hearings, visit state agencies, including the Legislative Reference Bureau and Bureau on Aging and Long Term Care Resources, and learn how to be effective advocates on the issues that concern them. For more information, call 1-800-366-2990 or e-mail glennas@cwag.org.)
