To the Editor:

The Wausau Daily Herald’s Oct. 10, 2005, editorial on the Lincoln County settlement with former Social Services Director David Chapleau, should be read by every Lincoln County resident.

Is the board covering something by buying Mr. Chapleau’s silence? If Mr. Chapleau did do something wrong shouldn’t (he) just be fired? The board went from being the judge and the jury in this case to being compensation lawyers, getting Mr. Chapleau a fair settlement for work well done. At least that seems to be the case here.

So far the only people losing on this whole ordeal are the employees who left their jobs at Social Services because of work conditions over a period of time.

Apparently the County Board has decided that Mr. Chapleau didn’t do anything wrong, otherwise why would they pay him in excess of $150,000 plus spend another $63,000 on their own legal fees? I would hope the people who left their jobs are half as well compensated by the board after the rest of the lawsuits are settled. The county is not done paying out money by any means on this matter.

Yah, I don't get it!!! I thought when you sexually harass someone in the workplace you get fired. This guy gets generously compensated. He's got to be laughing all the way to the bank. He sells his house and a very reasonable fast selling price and takes the free $150,000 and moves to "I don't care, anywhere, USA. Then he tells his new friends he is an ex-racecar driver and lives happily ever after.

If the county board voted to pay this guy, maybe at election time the people of Lincoln county need to fire them and send a message. It is the tax payer paying for this.

The way I hear it is, he asked some woman out for a date at work. She said no. From then on she had a hard time in the workplace. So they don't catagorize that as sexual harassment, they call it, creating a hostile work environment. Hey, you go out with me or I can make it rough around here for you. So here comes the bored "board". They say, "Let's not put this guy in jail, let's not even slap his hand, let's give him $150,000 and a big smile, shake his hand and wish him well. When Mr. David Chapleau was a probation officer before social services director, he wouldn't cut anybody any slack, everything had to be to the letter and his way. Good riddens to bad rubbish.
