Main Street Program

Postby Tomahawk Leader » Tue Dec 18, 2007 5:54 pm

A Letter to the Editor in the Dec. 18 Tomahawk Leader:

To the Editor:

The Wisconsin Main Street Program currently has 36 communities involved with the program. Of those involved, the closest in population to Tomahawk are Algoma, Darlington, Ripon, Sheboygan Falls and Viroqua. Last, but not least, these communities also had success stories for the 2005-2006 year in areas of organization, promotions, design and economic restructuring not to mention winning Wisconsin Main Street Awards. Of those municipalities listed, there were 13 new business additions and 41 building rehabs.

In January and February 2005, there was a Tomahawk Business Retention and Expansion Survey conducted. Nearly all of the comments in one way or another advocated that local government take a more active role in helping to foster business growth, retention and revitalization of certain areas of the city.

Revitalization of main downtown shopping areas in any municipality would not only attract new businesses, but the main downtown climates would be enhanced. With not only Tomahawk business, but even more important, the city government jumping on the band wagon to take on the Wisconsin Main Street Program, this could foster new promotions and/or city initiated events that will not only draw more local population, but draw populations from surrounding communities and tourists.

P.S. A quote from the Tomahawk Business Retention and Expansion survey report from 2005, Page 4, Question 4 “local government needs to realize that in order to have a healthy business community (it) needs to help the downtown.”
