Tomahawk man dies from injuries sustained in fire
A Tomahawk man injured in a July 23 structure fire at a town of Bradley home where he was a caretaker has died.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department responded to a 911 call reporting a structure fire on Rapel Road at 10:25 a.m. Firefighters from the Tomahawk and Nokomis Fire Departments responded to the blaze, along with Tomahawk EMS and deputies.
Two Tomahawk EMS rescuers, Paramedic Steve Taskay and EMT/IV-Technician Brian Teeters, entered the attached garage and were able to remove the victim, Phillip Erickson, 74, prior to the arrival of firefighters.
Erickson was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital and then flown by Mayo One Helicopter to Regions Hospital in Saint Paul, Minn., a level one trauma center specializing in treatment of burn victims. The following day, Erickson died as a result of burns sustained in the fire.
Preliminary investigation indicates the fire started in the garage while Erickson was repairing a vehicle. It appears he was using starting fluid in an effort to start the car. The exact cause of the fire is not known, and may never be known, noted Lincoln County Communications Officer Michael Caylor.
