Challenging job deserves thanks

A letter in the May 13 Tomahawk Leader:

Dear Editor,

All one has to do is turn on the news or read the financial page, to get an idea of the changing times in our society. With the rise of violence and self destruction in the last few years, law enforcement officers working in the largest police departments to the smallest of county sheriff’s offices must feel as though they are serving a world gone crazy.

Most law enforcement officials are determined to see that justice prevails and corruption does not win out. In this quest, they reach out in love and compassion yet cannot help but be affected by the pain, suffering and hardship that force those who cross their path in their day to day experiences.

This can impose a tremendous toll both personally and to their families, as they respond to threats in our communities. In a domestic disturbance alone, they have to deal with various issues such as: financial difficulties, marital problems, divorce, suicide and depression. The difficult and sometimes dangerous situations can cause them to become bitter and disillusioned with the system.

We trust them with our personal lives as they put their own lives on the line. This is indeed a calling that demands strength of character and requires our support and encouragement.

May 11-17 is Law Enforcement Week. Next time you meet a law enforcement officer, i.e., policeman, sheriff and/or deputy, state trooper or game warden and the like, thank them profoundly for their dedicated service to our community.
