A Letter in the Sept. 9 Tomahawk Leader:
The Tomahawk Police Department has again received a Local Motorcycle Enforcement grant from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for the Fall Ride event scheduled for Sept. 11-14. This will mark the fifth year that the Tomahawk Police Department has received this grant to enforce motor vehicle laws and promote the overall safety of this event.
Additional patrol units will be assigned to traffic enforcement in the City of Tomahawk during this event. These units will focus on speed and alcohol related traffic violations. It is our desire that all operators, both motorcycle and motor vehicle, will operate with due regard for the laws and with an extra measure of caution during this event. Those that elect not to do so can expect to have a contact with a law enforcement officer.
This event brings an increase in both traffic and pedestrian volume to the City of Tomahawk and surrounding area. Motorists are asked to be courteous to pedestrians and reminded that it is a state law to yield to pedestrians who are in a designated crosswalk. Motor vehicle operators are asked to be alert to the presence of motorcycles and to check their blind spots carefully before making a lane change, turn or entrance onto a roadway.
In 2007, the Tomahawk Police Department investigated three traffic crashes during this event with just one of those involving an injury. Our goal is that there be no traffic crashes or injuries during the 2008 event.
To all Fall Ride participants we wish a safe and enjoyable riding experience in the Northwoods.
