While we’ve learned to not often be surprised anymore, we do seriously doubt that there is anyone in the Tomahawk area by now who is not aware that the Fourth Street/Veterans Memorial Bridge will be demolished beginning next week and replaced. The process will take nearly a year, during which time North Fourth Street, itself, will also be reconstructed. There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that, for the entire community, it will be a major inconvenience, especially in today’s rather miserable economic times.

But it will not be a disaster. Think about what other communities have endured and survived: tornadoes, earthquakes, hurricanes, fires, floods, wars. Tomahawk is losing a bridge – its main artery through the city – for a few months. No lives will be lost; no bodies maimed. No homes will be destroyed. Children will not be orphaned. We’ll simply have to drive a bit farther to get from one side of town to the other. Perhaps 12 miles roundtrip or less. That’s less than millions of Americans – including some here in the Tomahawk area – drive every day to get to and from work!
Yes, it’s different than what we’re used to. Inconvenient to say the least. But it’s not tragic, people! We will get through it, especially if we keep a positive attitude and work together. Certainly, we’ll have to plan our trips better. Share a ride with a neighbor or offer to pick something up at the store for someone. Offer assistance or ask for help by placing messages on the Tomahawk Leader website Message Board at www.tomahawkleader.com.

And next year at this time we’ll be saying to ourselves, “Look at this beautiful community, made better and stronger by our hardy, thoughtful and energetic neighbors!”
