An editorial in the June 3 Tomahawk Leader:

Here’s your chance to try one of Wisconsin’s great pastimes with very little investment. Make it a family affair during the annual Free Fishing Weekend, hosted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources this coming weekend, Saturday-Sunday, June 7-8.
During the special statewide event, residents and non-residents alike can fish without a license or trout or salmon stamps. However, keep in mind, all other fishing regulations regarding length and bag limits apply. All the waters of the state will be open, including inland lakes and streams, state waters of the Great Lakes and rivers bordering Wisconsin.

The event is designed to encourage families to get outdoors and fish together. And, there are lots of opportunities right in our own back yard. Wisconsin is home to 165 fish species, and anglers in Wisconsin have 15,000 inland lakes, 42,000 miles of streams and rivers, plus the Great Lakes Shoreline and 260 miles of the Mississippi River to fish. About 1.4 million licenses are sold each year to adult anglers in the Badger State, with Wisconsin trailing only Florida in the number of days nonresident anglers spend fishing here.

If a hike is more to your liking, you’re in luck, too. Saturday is also National Trails Day, with a variety of special events planned.
Wisconsin State Parks will do away with admission stickers on Sunday, making that an ideal time for a visit.

Locally, on June 8 from 9 a.m. to noon, Council Grounds State Park, off Hwy. 107, Merrill, will tie in with the free fishing weekend by hosting casting games, offering prize drawings and providing fishing assistance. The target ages are 1-12.

State history also will come to life during Visitor Appreciation Day at Wisconsin historic sites (Circus World Museum excluded) this Sunday for a special day of discounted family fun. Stroll through the villages and farms of Old World Wisconsin, travel back to 1860s Wisconsin at the Wade House, visit the Victorian-era hallways of Villa Louis and much more. Children under the age of 5 are free.

For more information about these and other events, visit travelwisconsin.com or call the Wisconsin Department of Tourism's toll-free number at 1-800-432-TRIP/8747.
