With gas prices creeping up, along with everything else, what are somethings anyone is doing to cut back? Travel plans for summer changing?

We've turned a long camping weekend into a renting a no frills cottage weekend at the same location. With our truck getting 8-10 mpg pulling our travel trailer it seemed like the economical and logical thing to do. Especially on a 150 plus mile trip if gas prices are over $4.00/gallon by then. The fish won't care if we sleep in a camper or a cabin.

Must be a cheap cabin.

Compared to some parts of northern WI, yes it is a relatively cheap cabin. Mainly because it's not near a popular tourist destination. I know that an equal in the Tomahawk/Minocqua/Rhinelander area would be double. By renting a cabin a boat is included with that rental. If we were to camp we would need to rent a boat. Some firewood comes with the cabin, camping would mean buying. With a cabin you don't need to dump a holding tank, with camping of course you do for a fee. Lots of little extra fees that add up.

At the Chevron we're paying:
Regular: $4.01
Premium: $4.25

At ARCO a little cheaper.

But this is California. I think our state air board requires some extra chemicals mixed in to 'keep the air cleaner' which boasts the price some.

Do I hear $5.00/gallon by summer !!

What's the price in Tomahawk and surrounding area?
------------

Ahhhhh.... a little vacation in a little cabin on a quiet lake in Northern WI. Those things don't really exist, to they ??

kmartel, YIKES, not surprised with CA. Here in the Chippewa Valley last night it was $3.59. Not sure about today haven't left the house, don't plan on it, SNOWING AGAIN!!!

Yes that cabin does exist. Quiet little lake, no jet skis, no Walleyes but plenty of panfish and Northern. Actually, 4 little cabins and a small campground. The call of the loon and the drone of a small horse power boat motor is about the most for noise. At night it's really dark too. When we camped there there last year for the first time in many years I was disappointed to see that the cabins now have satellite dishes.

Deb, I don't believe a word of what you say! You're obviously reading this out of a 1955 tourist brochure! Sounds like you and Catfish are in cahoots and sharing the NO. BTW...he's been suspiciously quiet for the past couple of days. Maybe La la la la la!

------

In San Francisco (35 miles north of me) the cost of gas can be about $0.50 MORE per gallon than down where I live or in San Jose (about 30 miles south of me).

Like any good catfish I think our Catfish is laying in the weeds waiting...waiting....La, la, la, la!

So kmartell maybe not 1955 (which I must say was a very good year) but go into the town's little grocery story and it could be 1965.

Aw shucks, yous guys is missing me. Actually our modem took a dump. Haven't been able to log on to anything. After hours on the phone with Frontier tech support they've come to the conclusion that we need a new one. They sent one and we haven't been able to get it hooked up yet. Will have to call Frontier back. This is one of the rare times I got on line. Seems it comes and goes. What a hassle waiting forever for something to open then all of a sudden saying this page cannot be opened. The moden they sent is a wireless and we can't figure out how to install it.

As gas went up to $3.94 yesterday in the Chippewa Valley I got to thinking, the Amish may be on to something. Wonder how I'd look in a bonnet?

Yesterday was $4.15 at the local ARCO station and across the street at the Chevron it was $4.25. I tried the bonnet thing and was just laughed at...didn't make a difference how cute I looked...they just wanted my money.

Yes, perhaps the Amish have the right idea, just be careful you don't step in the exhaust when you are following them.

My wife came up with a plan to beat the high price of gas. She bought a 50 cc Honda scooter to do her running with this summer. Figures at 50 mpg she will have it just about paid for by fall.

Maybe that is the answer, everybody buy one and cut the use of gas by 75% and then listen to the oil companies squeal ! :P

Old Scout, don't even get me going on the 'exhaust' left behind by the Amish. In the village of Augusta they need to have bags on the behinds of their horses or get fined. Many country roads here have much 'exhaust' left behind. If they park a buggy in a public parking area why can't they shovel up the 'exhaust' and fertilize their garden.

My car gets in the high forties mpg wise in the summer so I do not forsee any changes for me. And I camp with a tent. In fact I don't mind the higher gas prices when it comes to traveling and camping. It takes some of the Valdez Class tankers off of the highway except for the wealthy. They don't don't even notice.

And of course everyone can save 10-15% on gas just by driving 55 mph or less.
