Maybe everybody left because the Leader is running an anti second amendment constitutional right advertisement. Why would a paper allow that propaganda on the front page if its web-site? Especially a paper rooted in Wisconsin's north-woods. This will sure get a discussion going at our hunting camp. BOO Leader BOO!

Please note that the Leader simply uses Google Ads to fill in any open advertising space. If there is an ad you find offensive or don't feel is appropriate, send an email or post a link. If I can track it down and we agree, we can block it.

The one that was on your front page from the group that hides under a touchy-feely name. The one who's true agenda is to pull every firearm out of the hands of Tomahawk's many, many hunters. They call themselves the Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort (WAVE). You ran they're ad. Maybe it was through a google account; if so you should monitor that account more closely. I'd suggest you block it.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean someone can't buy advertising space and use it to say what they want.

This isn't the case, but I could just as easily say I do not want any pro-gun groups advertising on the Leader.

Oh I understand, and I'm in favor of, the freedom of speech. These WAVE wack-o's can and should believe in any crack-pot idea they want. They can talk and write all about it too.

Selling advertising space in a newpaper (or on its web-site) has nothing to do with freedom of speech. No freedoms are violated if a newspaper refuses to sell ad space to a propagandist, lie spewing, ill-thinking group. Which is exactly what the leader should have done in this case.

Running anti-second amendment rights ads in the north woods of Wisconsin is bad business practice. The readers will quickly stop buying papers if they think the Leader endorses such nonsense. Hopefully we won't be seeing any PETA or HSUS ads popping-up any time soon! Note to Leader: block those ASAP!!!

So, if you've been visiting WAVE's website a lot, this is one of the ads that will show up when you go to another site (i.e. Tomahawk Leader) which uses Google Ads....

Also, I just got an ad for "Meet Christian Singles".

No, they generally base the ad content on the context of the pages. For example, if you are on a thread talking about real estate, you're more likely to get an ad related to houses for sale. If you are talking about handguns, well, odds increase you'll get an ad related to guns.

Other times they just kind of wing it.

As an advertiser, you pick what key words you want your ad associated with and it tries to pick related websites based on if those keywords appear.

Due to our travel and outdoors related nature nearly 24% of the google ads that appear on our website are Travel & Tourism related.

Also, it's impossible for me to block an ad just based on a rough description. I need the actual website that the ad sends you to. For example, we block one website because we also pay to list it. I don't want to pay to list a website on a site I already manage. We also block any sexual related ads (but not dating sites). If there is an ad that really should be removed, please email us with where it's pointing to, don't post a link on the Message Boards.

I also don't believe we're going to block an advertiser just because people disagree with the content. We run ads for businesses we wouldn't personally shop at. We also allow people to pay to print especially long letters as advertisements, many of which I don't personally agree with. Unless the ad is flat out offensive, odds are, its fair game.

This website isn't exactly a strong money maker and if we are going to start removing the only thing that is actually generating any revenue on it we might as well just turn it off and save ourselves a lot of time and money... Political ads were only 5% of the impressions on the website in the last 30 days but they were 23% of the revenue. I suspect if PETA wanted to pay us to put an ad in the paper, we'd probably run the ad. Again, we don't necessarily agree with the content of the ads, just like we often don't agree with the content of the letters.

Sounds good, Kerry. I was just kidding about the Christian singles website, just trying to make a point. I think we all understand that these ads do not reflect the viewpoints of the Tomahawk Leader.

Hey Catfish, how were those bluegill? When living in the Tomahawk my hubby would put in at Bradley Park circle toward Sara Park for the bluegill. Sure do miss all that. Someday soon I hope.
This past week we were at a favorite retreat in Ashland county that my family frequented for many summers. My 79 year old mother got a dandy Northern. A fatted bodied fellow of 30". My husband found the bluegill. With all that we had a dandy fish fry our last night. Gotta love the north woods and it's simple pleasures.
