In 1954, Dwight Eisenhower wrote a letter to his brother. Among the things he said was this: "Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things.... Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

It is interesting that the current Republican Party dominated by the extreme right of the Tea Party would never even tolerate a candidate like Eisenhower, Reagan, or even the first George Bush. It shows how far right they have moved toward the fringe.
