"is this primarily a Republican shenanigan?"

I really doubt it, remember we have the best government money can buy no matter what their political party.
The National Institutes of Health has just released the results of a $200 million research study completed under a grant to Johns Hopkins.
The new study has found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer than the men who mention it.

The republicans control all aspects of government now: executive, legislative, and judiciary so the ball is in their court. I suspect there will be much grandstanding; they will pass some useless legislation, pat each other on the back, then go on an elaborate junket sponsored by the coal mining corporations and then pass a law forbidding citizens to sue coal mining corporations just as they did for the gun industry and the pharmaceutical industry.
