Holiday Spirit???

Postby Kerry Tobin » Sun Dec 22, 2002 5:51 pm

Does anyone else remember how incredible Tomahawk looked with all the Christmas lights on? Turning the lights on was a major event downtown, news channels even came for the lights and people.

What happened? I've returned to Tomahawk for the weekend and the street lights are the nicest looking things in town. Every city I've driven through so far this winter has done more.

I wish I knew where we had our pictures. We even had some from a lift bucket so you could see the whole street.

Things have certainly changed! Not always for the better. Twelve years ago when we first moved to Tomahawk my dad was excited to come and visit during the Christmas season because of the downtown lighting. If he were alive today I know exactly what he would be saying, however it wouldn't be printable here. Maybe calls to the Chamber could help in returning our downtown to days of yesteryear.

Holiday lighting has come under more budget scrutiny this year, not just in Tomahawk. Takes money to buy, time to put up and take down and more electric costs to run.

I understand budget concerns but it isn't just this year. The lights have been sliding each year after the first few.

This year is pretty much just pitiful.

I had heard that hardly any businesses had lights this year, so I took a ride thru town after dark last week... I also was amazed at how "this tradition" has gone downhill.A few years ago this was a big attraction to the downtown area, and it is sorely missed. I also would like to make the suggestion that the Chamber consider combining the "Venison Feed" with the Lighting of the Lights, and Christmas Parade. There are alot of people in town that day/night. If held on opening weekend of deer season, with Sales and Special Shopping Hours, and was made into more of a "Kick Off to the Christmas Shopping Season" it could be a valuable asset to the downtown area, besides spreading the Christmas Spirit.
