Theft at fallen soldier's memorial benefit

Postby Tomahawk Leader » Tue Sep 26, 2006 4:05 pm

This is a news story from the Sept. 26, 2006 Tomahawk Leader, but we feel it is worthy of public comment:

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after the family of a Merrill solider killed while serving in Iraq reported a theft Sunday afternoon.

Family members of PFC Grant Dampier held a fund raiser Saturday at Rock Island Resort on State Road 107 in the town of Merrill. The goal of the event was to raise funds to establish a war memorial in a Merrill city park.

When the Dampier family returned to Rock Island Sunday morning, they found numerous items had been stolen from an outside tent, that included food, cups, plates and raffle prizes which were not immediately claimed. The loss is more than $400.

Also stolen was a four-foot-by-six-foot banner that was made by the Budweiser Corp. with Dampier’s picture and the words, “Remembering SPC Grant Dampier.”

Anyone with information regarding the crime is encouraged to call the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department at 536-6272 or Crime Stoppers of Lincoln County at 536-3726 or 1-800-222-TIPS.

It was on the news that an unidentified Wausau subject has put up the amount of the missing funds - that is outstanding. It is a shame that it happened in the first place.

What about the banner with Sargeant Dampier's photo on it. That meant alot to the family. That's a memento and money don't replace it.

By the way, now that the the family has been paid it's missing funds, the Lincoln County Sheriffs Department can stop looking for the perp. The family's been paid back. RIGHT????

No, they should not stop looking for the guilty party. The pay back was to help the family, not penalize the memory of their son. The banner is a family momento & yes, the guilty party/parties should still be sought for the crime happening in the first place.

Logic, I was being facetious. Spurred by previous actions of Lincoln County Sheriff's Department.

Money "Schmoney"... It was a bad idea to leave the stuff there.
It sucks, but don't steal the banner!!
There should be a "drop-off" place designated for the banner where someone could bring it back. Someone SHOULD have a guilty conscience that needs to be cleared.
My best wishes go out to the soldier, Mr. Dampier's family.
The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese....
