As part of Gov. Jim Doyle's Sex Offender Apprehension and Felony Enforcement (SAFE) Initiative, Wisconsin citizens will now be able to access residential address information online for all sex offenders registered with the Department of Corrections' Sex Offender Registry.

We believe this is an important step, allowing communities to stay vigilant in protecting children and families, as well as staying aware of possible community threats. As Doyle noted, "Wisconsin parents, grandparents and other members of the public have a right to know who is living on their streets and in their communities."

The state's sex offender web site, launched in 2001, has contained information regarding the more than 17,800 offenders who are required to register under court orders. Until Dec. 1, however, that information lacked the offenders' residence address. Now, under the governor's Sex Offender Apprehension and Felony Enforcement (SAFE) Initiative, home addresses will be added to the site at http://WIDOCOffenders.org.

The state also has introduced a new, toll-free SAFE Tip hotline to report violations regarding noncompliant sex offenders. Callers also can learn more about the SAFE Initiative and Wisconsin's Sex Offender Registry. The hotline is 1-877-234-0085 and is available Monday through Friday between 7:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. A SAFE Tip e-mail address, docsafetips@doc.state.wi.us. This e-mail address gives citizens another way to provide tips to SAFE Teams or obtain information.

Keeping citizens safe and aware is a vital part in fostering a healthy community. The state's initiative provides one additional way for residents to take action and be sure they are informed of what's going on in their area.

I believe this would be the correct link:
http://offender.doc.state.wi.us/public/

This is not a very comforting website. Schofield, WI must be the dumping ground for all the sex offenders in the state.
