The following editorial appears in the Sept. 19, 2006, Tomahawk Leader:

The city is practically spotless.

Entering Tomahawk Monday morning one would never know that just 24 hours earlier, tens of thousands of bikers were in town for the Tomahawk Fall Ride for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Accommodating that many people into a city of less than 4,000 takes a lot of planning, efforts and commitment on the part of the people who work the Tomahawk Fall Ride. From citizens, MDA, the city of Tomahawk, Harley-Davidson Tomahawk Operations, Tomahawk Regional Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Business Council to law enforcement and small businesses, everyone comes together to make this event work. Most of these people are volunteers, dedicating their time not just for a successfully-run event, but for a good cause – families dealing with MDA.

It takes a lot of hands to put up barricades, safety measures, trash receptacles, booths and electricity to keep the ride up and running safely. And with a huge influx of visitors utilizing the city streets and parks during the event, clean-up afterwards takes just as many hands.

We are impressed with the nearly spotless city streets, sidewalks and parks. Tomahawk’s volunteers and hard workers deserve a hearty round of applause for their tireless efforts, support and work in putting on the largest motorcycle rally in northern Wisconsin.

Tie to Tomahawk: born in Tomahawk - family
this may be true in town, but I've been told that Nokomis Park was a mess yet on Weds of this week. The ball fields were trashed - big holes in them. Was the move to Nokomis a good move (economically) for the city of Tomahawk? I know it helped with crowd control & traffic, but now is the "congestion" in Nokomis & the business shifted to Onedia county? I have heard that town businesses have been saying that businesses this year was average - I thought we had a bigger crowd this year, so the majority of the bikers & company stayed in Nokomis? Just wondering what the feeling is.........

You're referring to Bubba's Bash. That event was always separate and never held in the City of Tomahawk so I don't see any economic drain just because it moved to Cougar Field. It was previously held at what is now Oaks Pub and at the Speedway (now closed), both of which are in the Township of Bradley. Also, the Nokomis Town Board had to have approved the use of the town park up there and I'd guess that the agreement includes clauses covering cleanup and damage responsibility. As for business around town being described as 'average' this year, guess what? That's still a WHOLE lot of money!

Talking to a business owner real close to Cougar Park-Nokomis Park, the township board is happy that Bubba is leasing the park. All the money that Bubba gave a private individual for the lease of the race track now goes to Nokomis Park and is said to be entirely used for park improvements.
