A Letter to the Editor in the 1/31/06 Tomahawk Leader
To the Editor:
Not long ago Mr. Dave Obey breezed through town on a “fact finding” campaign trip. During the discussion the old “Tax Cuts for the Rich” mantra was thrown out. Sad to say a lot of people attending bought into the deception. The fact is in spite of across-the-board tax cuts the federal government reported that tax revenues collected in September were the highest ever in the history of the United States, proving the theory that tax cuts = more spending = more jobs = more tax revenue. In addition, the increase in Child Tax Credit meant that some people who pay no taxes at all received a larger check back from the government. That doesn’t sound like tax cuts for the rich to me.
Among our elected representatives are some of the wealthiest people in the country. If they feel so guilty about voting themselves tax cuts then perhaps they would be willing to make additional voluntary contributions to the IRS. Maybe then we will find out how serious they are about taking care of us “little people.”
In this time of heated election rhetoric we must try to cut through all the mud and verbal garbage that is being slung around and find out where the candidates stand on the real issues. The important thing is not what they say about the activities of their opponents, but what they will actually do when they get to office. It’s a tough job for the voters, but it is our responsibility to do it.
