Taking on tobacco issue …

Postby Tomahawk Leader » Fri Nov 17, 2006 10:19 pm

To the Editor:

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” —Margaret Mead

… Maybe not the world this time, but certainly the grounds of the Tomahawk School District. “A small group of thoughtful, committed” fifth graders have decided to take on the issue of tobacco use on school property. The fifth grade Leadership Team has written to the Department of Public Instruction for a mini-grant to help “get the word out” that tobacco use on school property is illegal. Yes, it is a problem. The students did a preliminary survey/clean-up of cigarette butts in front of the main doors of each of the buildings and they were astounded to find more proof than they needed to verify that people must not realize that tobacco use on school property is illegal. They plan to write letters to the editor over the next few weeks and create in-school publicity to help educate Tomahawk citizens. If they receive the grant they will be adding new signage to the property, and creating ads for the paper and radio. If you believe in their efforts, words of encouragement to the team would let them know that their efforts are appreciated. Perhaps they can make a change in a long, on-going problem. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can …”

(Editor's note: The next letter is the first in a series of student-written pleas to address the issue of tobacco products on the Tomahawk School District grounds. The students appeared before the School Board Tuesday night and received full approval to take the issue to the Common Council. We'll be following the topic and the student campaign closely. Your support and ideas are appreciated.)

Reducing tobacco users …

To the Editor:

TATOOS is the name of the project. TATOOS stands for Take All Tobacco Out Of School. The Tomahawk Elementary Fifth Grade Leadership groups is trying to reduce and prevent tobacco use on school property. We are trying to change people’s behavior by educating them to know that they can’t use tobacco products on school grounds and that it is illegal for kids under 18 to smoke anywhere. Even if we only prevent a couple of older people, they will become good role models for younger students.

We believe that adults smoking around other kids would be a bad role model. The non-smokers will be happier because they won’t see cigarette butts on the ground and they won’t breathe in all the bad smoke. They also won’t see people smoking on sidewalks or other places. Smokers and tobacco users will learn not to use tobacco on school grounds. Non-smokers will not feel that much peer pressure on tobacco and give support for tobacco users to hang in there or keep trying to quit.

Set a bad example …

To the Editor,

Our motto is TATOOS. It stands for “Take All Tobacco Out Of Schools.” We feel that tobacco users on school property set a bad example for younger students. It also is bad for the environment, and for citizens who come to our school. An example of this may be sporting events.

Tomahawk Elementary Fifth Grade Leadership Group is trying to reduce and prevent tobacco usage on school grounds. Hopefully, we will make a big impact and will affect some citizens outside of school grounds. We think it is wrong for anybody to use tobacco products on school property because we want students to have a healthy life and a good education.

Sincerely,
Amanda Timm
