Global warming scare

Postby Tomahawk Leader » Tue Mar 18, 2008 6:37 pm

(Letter in the March 18, 2008, edition of the Tomahawk Leader)

To the Editor:

“Tell a lie. Tell if often. Soon people will believe it and will start making decisions based on that lie.” So said Josef Goebbles, the Nazi propaganda minister for Adolf Hitler. Such is the case with the issue of “Global Warming.”

It is true that the Earth has warmed slightly in the last 30 years (about .4 degree), the lie is that human activity in the form of “greenhouse gasses” such as carbon dioxide (CO2) have anything to do with it. All, repeat, all heat received by the Earth comes from the sun. The slight increase in temperature corresponds to an increase in solar activity, i.e. solar flares. When the solar activity decreases, as it is expected to do in a short time, Earth’s temperature will drop back.

CO2 does not trap heat. Two simple examples prove that fact.
Daytime temperatures, in the desert, can reach well over 100 degrees and drop to near freezing at night. No heat retention there, even though there is just as much CO2 in the desert atmosphere as anywhere else. The next time the winter temperature drops really cold look at the sky. Chances are it will be clear. In both examples, the heat absorbed during the day is radiated out into space. The temperature moderates when the clouds move in. It’s the clouds (water vapor) that reflect and retain heat, not CO2.

It is true that CO2 is called a “greenhouse gas.” Some greenhouse operators actually pump it into their greenhouses because it promotes plant growth. It has nothing to do with retaining heat.
The big “global warming scare” is being promoted by the major media to frighten the people into demanding that the U.S. government sign and ratify the KYOTO accord which would grant to the United Nations the power to tax and ration energy. If the UN controls, rations and taxes energy, they will have the power to determine whether you can operate a wood stove, whether you can run an automobile, and if and when you can use electricity.
The power to tax and ration energy is the power to control the world – to have life and death control over every person on this planet. No government should have this power. The UN agenda is not about the climate or saving the environment. It is about power and money – lots of both.

It is long past time to get the U.S. out of the UN. Our freedom and independence cannot survive if we remain a member.

Sincerely,
Kirby F. Crosby

It appears they will not be publishing my letter so I have pasted it below:

Human caused climate change is well-based in science.

A letter writer of March 18 claims that humans have no effect on climate change. Contrary to the claims of the letter writer, it is easy to tell the difference between the carbon dioxide (CO2), methane, and other greenhouse gases that are human caused and that are caused by natural phenomena. The chemical markers of the isotopes of various gases make it clear that the unusually high increases since the beginning of the industrial revolution are human caused.

The argument of the current accelerated warming coming from increases of the Sun's effect are as easily debunked. The Sun's effects have been taken into consideration of climate change modeling for many years and show little effect to account for global warming. If the Sun's effect was that much with so little change as a solar flare would we not be nice and warm here in the northern hemisphere in the winter? After all the Earth is only 91.4 million miles away when we are in winter and farthest at 94.5 million miles in summer. The Sun even has little to do with our seasons. The various claims that the Sun is responsible for the current accelerated climate change have been debunked again and again. However, as the letter writer points out, if you repeat something often enough it just keeps going. Many gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and water vapor all absorb infrared radiant heat, stalling it from radiating back into space and instead returning some of this heat to warm the surface of the planet. This transpires as much as 60 miles up into the atmosphere. We depend on a certain amount of this greenhouse effect to keep the planet livable for humans, but too much makes it unlivable. The anti-science comments of the letter writer also leave out the impact of the many other greenhouse gases, especially methane that is 20-25 times more potent as a greenhouse gas. Again we can scientifically ascertain that plants and natural sources release up to 30 percent of the planet's methane but the rest comes from human activities.

The global warming debate aside there are still very good reasons to work on getting these and companion pollutants out of our emissions. Health costs, forest destruction from acid rain, mercury contamination of our fish and food supply, and the increase in air quality advisories here in Wisconsin are good reasons to aggressively pursue pollution reductions.

The rest of the letter writer's comments are simply garden variety conspiracy myths that can be found on any anti-government website.

Just curious, where do the normal warming and cooling cycles fit into this. The earth has gone through waming and cooling before, (the ice age for example) and if there hadn't been some global warming the Tomahawk area would still be under a sheet of ice. Other scientist claim this is just part of the normal pattern. Who can we believe when they both claim to be right ? :?
The National Institutes of Health has just released the results of a $200 million research study completed under a grant to Johns Hopkins.
The new study has found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer than the men who mention it.

As I sit here looking out my window, watching the snow pile up I keep wondering "where is the global warming when we need some" I am getting really tired of this cruddy white stuff ! ! !

Yes warming has occurred before over long periods of time. The current atypical warming does not allow for plant and animal species to adapt or evolve. Never before when one backtracks the historical and evidenciary record is there a time when the warming occurred in such a short time.

As to one season/instance refuting or creating a scientific theory - it doesn't. As Aristotle said, "One Swallow does not a springtime make." Also global warming does not predict uniform warming but rather different effects in different places.

On this topic:

April 22, Tuesday on Public Television Frontline Program
8;00 p,m. Frontline "Heat." For years, big business - from oil and coal companies to electric utilities to car manufacturers - have resisted change to environmental policy and stifled the debate over climate change in America and around the globe. (Repeats 4/23 at 11 p.m.)
