FACT: They killed 8,000

Postby Tomahawk Leader » Wed May 14, 2008 4:47 pm

A small Wisconsin town – the size of Rhinelander – has been wiped off the map. It’s as if 8,000 people have completely disappeared.

This is no horror film … but rather FACT’s new media campaign based on the 8,000 people killed every year from tobacco-related illnesses in Wisconsin. FACT (Fighting Against Corporate Tobacco), Wisconsin’s first statewide tobacco prevention movement for youth ages 13-18, kicked off its new media and activism campaign titled, “They Killed 8,000.” The television spots, created by and starring the youth advocates, is airing statewide through May 18.

This was a year-long process, and the youth were involved from start to finish, says Laura Mays, Oneida County Tobacco-Free coordinator. The process began in spring and summer of 2007, as FACT members joined together for Creative Expression Challenges in Minocqua, Hudson, Appleton, Madison and Milwaukee. Six local youth participated in the Minocqua challenge. Then, in August, FACT representatives from all regions of the state met in Madison for the “Final Challenge” to select and polish their one big campaign idea. Oneida County sent two youth to help.

“I hope that after people see the commercial, they'll be inspired to contact us or start their own local FACT group,” observes Danielle Larson, Rhinelander High School FACT member.

Another element of the “They Killed 8,000” campaign includes a banner ad on MySpace profile pages of Wisconsin teens age 17 and under that links to the redesigned FACT web site http://www.fightwithfact.com.

This campaign does not rest on media alone. To provide additional support, 36 FACT groups across Wisconsin will be utilizing their Underground FACTivism Kits to take their message to Wisconsin teens by carrying out street marketing tactics in their communities.
For more information on the 8,000 statistic behind the FACT media campaign, check out the Burden of Tobacco 2006 report at http://www.medsch.wisc.edu/mep/download ... al_reports.

FACT is part of the Wisconsin Tobacco Control and Prevention program, a statewide program that includes tobacco treatment resources, state and local initiatives, youth tobacco prevention programs and media. The FACT movement is managed by the American Lung Association of Wisconsin. To view the new TV commercials, visit http://www.fightwithfact.com/spots.php (click on the 60 SEC box.)

I am suprised that this post has not generated some sort of response from the bar /restaurant owners protesting that they can't afford to alienate the smokers.

Appleton enforced a smoking ban for bars & restaurants. While I can't speak for the bars, there have been several ads for local restaurants that claim their business has increased after they went smoke-free.
What if there were no hypothetical questions?

In the U.S. over 500,000 die of smoking related diseases each year, 46,000 from vehicle crashes, 28,000 from gunshot, and an average of one per year from Cougar attack. Who gets the bad rap? The Cougar.
If all the atheists left the United States it would lose 93% of the National Academy of Sciences but less than 1% of the prison population.
