The blooming idiots in Madison are at it again. Now they want to pass a law forcing school districts to change their logo or mascot if it is in any way related to native americans. One of the schools on the hit list is the Tomahawk Hatchets ! Good grief how assinine can they get. A hatchet is a tool the was brought to america by the white man and has nothing to do with indians, and we sure as heck aren't going to change the name of our city. It's about time they quit their whining, get over it and get a life. It's bad enough that we have pamper and support them while they have more rights than we do but enough is enough. :x :x

For sure this topic is asinine on the part of the blooming idiots in Madison. I was tempted to comment on the situation by starting this thread and new topic. But thank you Old Scout, and may I now put my two cents worth in.
I was a proud athletic student back in the day, and our school and team mascot was The South High "Redmen". We were very proud to be Redmen, as I know the Tomahawk Hatchets are proud to be , "Hatchets". There are many more schools with Indian type mascots. All are proud to be what they are called. In no way did any school adopt the mascot of their choice to be a derogatory name. Quite the contrary, we all meant our teams mascot to be put on the very positive slant rather than derogatory. In that sense we put our mascots on a pedestal.
Now enter the blooming idiots insinuating we are being derogatory to the American Indian. Wow, where do they want to draw the line? What is next. There is as we know another group of idiots that want to delete all references to Christian dialog. In fact, now there is banter of discontinuing any broadcasted chuch services on Sunday, which will definately be a dis-service to the homebound or bedridden invalids that can't get out of the house to attend in person. Does a new group of idiots want to force school team's mascots that are referenced to a Christian theme. ie: The St. Thomas Aquinas team from Milwaukee etc. Where does this all lead to and when will it end?

If they push this through, perhaps I should file a suit against the Minn. Vikings. Being that I am of Norwegian decent, I consider them an insult to my ancestors. :P

why do "they" assume that it is being disrespectful using Indian related names. I think it is showing honor naming our teams after any Indian theme. I guess it is how you take it. It is amazing that everything is always translated in the negative instead of the positive. WOW :?

My question is why is it OK for Lakeland to be the Thunderbirds? To me that logo/name is very much Native American. Is it because they have a large Native American school population, that most likely was instrumental in the original decision making regarding their mascot? There are some people in our government that have way too much time on their hands!

Oh no, if the Hatchets end up having to change their name of their mascot, I feel what is good for the goose is good for the gander. That being the case, the Lakeland "Thunderbirds" should be required to change their's as well. I do believe there are over 40 schools on the hit list. The Thunderbirds may be on that list? Time will tell on how the whole can of worms gets distributed.

I was in Tomahawk this past week, while there caught News 9 out of Wausau. They listed many of the schools that were being targeted. Lakeland was not on that list. With so much happening with our economy wasting taxpayers money on school mascots is such a waste. Let's get real people.

There is no money involved except for those who may have to sand an emblem off a gym floor and most schools have been preparing for years to shed themselves of the offending images and names.

Mystic,

You mean other than buying new uniforms for all the sports, altering scoreboards, gyms and tracks. Not to mention all the t-shirts and other clothing the students and parents wear. Oh, and letterhead, banners, signs, etc.

Heck, an internal department charged another internal department nearly $500 yesterday for work on ONE poster.

And I'm still waiting to hear who a "Hatchet" is offensive to... If anything "Tomahawk" is more offensive and if you try to change the city name you're talking a whole lot more changes. It's all OK though, I'm preparing my lawsuit against Notre Dame. I'm also going after Lac du Flambeau, they can't be using another language like that, the nerve of them!

I do believe Lac du Flambeau is French for Lake of the Torches. They better look at changing their name, the name of the casino and everything else.

Old Scout,

I believe you're right, I've changed the earlier comment to reflect that...

Thanks!

Do you actually call those things you mention "educational" expenses that should be born by the taxpayer's in the first place?

Mystic,

I think some of the stuff is sponsored by the booster clubs, etc. but yes, some of those things will fall on the tax payers. The school built the gym. The schools also use their own letterhead, much of which I'm betting has the logo on it.

Maybe the DoD should change the name of their Tomahawk Missile as it is very derogatory to the city of Tomahawk AND the American Indians! :?

There is a common saying in the southern part of this state that "Madison is 50 square miles surrounded by reality." I'm not sure if the land size approximation is correct, but the overall idea is dead on. I work in Madison and the contrast in thought process between the two cities is night and day.

To put this in perspective, realize that most likely the people behind this drive are as much native american as Custer was. Eventually the people behind this will see a shiny object somewhere else and will move on. No need for good people to lose sleep.

I think neup99 hit this one on the head. We just need to wait for the, "ooh, shiny" moment...

I believe the beginnings of the mascot issue is from the Native American community, a small minority (no pun intended), that have found a sympathetic ear in Madison. A sympathetic ear with lots of influence. neup99 did hit this one on the head.

Back when my kids where Tomahawk Hatchet football players the Tomahawk chop became popular among the student section. On more than one occasion the Native American parent of a Hatchet player would start the chop! This parent felt that a hatchet chopping it's opponent wasn't in any way negative toward Native Americans. Nor should it be viewed as such by his fellow Native Americans.

My guess is the origin of this issue is a person that needs attention and in my opinion has brought more negative than positive to the Native American community.

Well, Old Scout "You ain't seen nothing yet." In all their wisdom the Nicolet Collage Board has hired one of the biggest idiots of all the Madison idiots to run that facility. None other than Elizabeth Burmaster, the State Superintendent of Schools, the Madison bureaucrat that authored the letter to the Tomahawk School Board requesting the mascot name change. The Madison idiot that doesn't understand that a Hatchet is an object and not the name of some American Indian princess. This Madison idiot is not bright enough to read a history on how our city was named before firing off politically correct demands on our school system.

Old Scout there's more to the "You ain't seen nothing yet." Elizabeth Burmaster has been nothing but a stooge for the biggest lobbying group in the state. Think your property taxes are high now wait until that Madison idiot has a chance to sink her claws into the Northwoods taxpayers behinds.

This is all a big hoo-haw generated to distract the voters from how badly the state budget has been handled by our elected officials the past eight years.
