A Letter to the Editor in the Sept. 23 Tomahawk Leader:

I want to thank the city for your foresight and wisdom in the development of your city sponsored Dog Park.
For those tourists that are hesitant about leaving the family pet dogs behind when on vacation this is a greatly appreciated option.

When you have driven for nine hours to visit your delightful city it is a pleasure to have the option for our pets to exercise and have the freedom of a playground. My partner, Mary, has two Irish Setters. Tinker and Bell are great travel companions. We are completely at ease during our trip. Free from concerns over their care by kennels whose staff one does not know well. Also we are assured that their exercise regime is maintained. Your concept of a Dog Park as an aid for tourists is a solid idea. I am sure that this will be a long-term added benefit to your fine city tourism.

Has anyone been down to the dog park lately. Whats up with all the satellite dishes? Boy does that look like crap. I hope the city doesn't have to clean that up. Who was the head of that dog park so I can call them and tell them that they need to clean that up down there. There is also dog poop all over the place on the ground out side of the fence.

That Dog Park idea is a pile of Dog Poop. When the heck is the city done wasting our tax money on hair brained ideas. No place to walk a dog? Try the miles of country roads or the forest crop land that surrounds Tomahawk. Like I said "DOG POOP."

What, no pooper-scooper law in that park? Gots to have a pooper-scooper law. If for no other reason you have to have one so the police chief can threaten screw-ups at the pd that if they do not straighten up they will be pulling poop patrol at the dog park.

While I agree that the dog park seems kind of ridiculous, I believe the dog park was funded with private donations. I don't think the city put anything into it...

A dog park can be a pretty cool thing if it is done right.

We have a rather large county park here and for years people just took their dogs out there and let them run around in the open areas including the picnic areas. A lot of people complained so they started a rather aggressive enforcement program and actually started ticketing people for violation of the leash laws.

Well needless to say that too brought on a lot of complaints.

One of the county supervisor’s administrative aids came up the idea that the dog people raid private money and ask the county to set aside a piece of the park for a dog park. An idea the time that I thought was sort of nutty. But the park, as I said was very large and it had the room so it was not going to really cost anyone but the dog people.

Now we have a really nice dog park where literally dozens of dogs are running around out there playing freebie and all sorts of crazy things. It is divided into a large dog area and a small dog area. My wife and I go out there with a sandwich and our favorite beverage just to watch the dogs.

It is got the dogs out of the park and everyone is happy.

Oh incidentally, it has a special area where your expected to curb you dog when you first get there. Of course that is not 100% but if your dog does doo-doo outside that area, there usually plenty of people around to glare at you until you do you pooper-scooper duty. Works out really well.

I think a dog park can make perfect sense in a larger city. Tomahawk however is surrounded by county and state public land. If you can't find somewhere to take your dog and enjoy a little nature at the same time you're not trying very hard.

The only time I think this makes any sense at all is during the gun deer hunt...

During gun deer season Bradley Park is a perfect place to walk a dog. Just make sure you clean up after it!

I think the whole idea behind the dog park is so Fido can have a social life.

That dog park fence may have been financed with private donations but it is sitting on thousands of dollars of city owned land that should be sold to private investors and property taxes paid on it if it serves no other purpose than being a dog poop collection point. The city still has to maintain the thing and there are costs associated with maintaining it. I'm weary of these "Wouldn't it be nice if" projects our local politicians seem to have on their agendas constantly.

We've lived here for about 35 years spent a ton of money and labor fixing up our place up only to have it taken away from us in our old age by property taxes that have no limits. At about 20 years living in Tomahawk we reached the tipping point where we had paid more in property taxes than we paid for the real estate in the first place. I'm fed up with all this "Dog Poop."

Our dog park here came out of the necessity to get the dogs out of the main part of the park and yes, there is a much larger population base.

I also agree with tooten that all possible uses of that land should be explored. But I thought that was being done. We have the very active thread going on the possibility of a campground. But I assume that other ideas are being explored.

When I lived in Tomahawk back the 60's, the area sort of seen itself as the gateway to the north and the beginning of the tourist/vacation area. Is that not still the case?

There has been mention of a lot of the resorts have sold off their cabins to private individuals attracting less tourist.

Maybe a full blown fancy resort hotel would be something to consider.

Well that too goes on at the dog park, but I was stooping pretty low talking about pooper-scooper and didn't want to mention that aspect of the park. But ya, that happens too. And more then you would guess. It was one of the main reasons they had to separate the small dogs form the larger ones.

Awww man! Now I really need to get a life. I'm now writing about pooper-scoopers AND dog dating....

You think dog poop is bad, we have people in our area that ride horses on the road and of course they leave these rather large piles on the road whenever they feel like it. Nothing like driving through one and having to wash the car when you get home. Perhaps they need to carry some plastic bags and a pooper scooper when they go out riding.

OK here we go again, off topic! I hear ya Scout! We have several Amish in the Chippewa Valley. What's particularly frustrating is when they fish at the lake of one of our favorite Chippewa Co. campground. The day use area will have several buggies parked,(especially free fishing weekend) piles all over after they have left. My gosh put a shovel in the back of that buggy and take the crap up into the woods!!! GRRRRRRRRRRR Last weekend there was a group fishing, for once they had the courtesy of unhitching the horse and tying it up in the woods. For the most part this doesn't happen.

Technically this may not be off topic, poop was mentioned in a responsive post.

Deb, I don't think there is any possible way of keeping this group on any topic for more than one or two posts. If there is a way to go off on a tangent we will find it.

I wonder what they would do if you had a shovel and went over to where the horses were and scooped it up and put it in the buggy so they could take it home to use it for fertilizer.

Ya, and just think about that for a minute; let the aroma of that one or two horse dropping experience sink in.

Now imagine 500, 600, 1000 horses a day parading up and down Tomahawk's main street as people do their shopping, drop off their kids at school, etc. etc.

There are actually environmental groups out there that think we would be better off going back to the horse and buggy for our main daily transportation.

Now imagine that in Milwaukee or Chicago?

Of course they did it back before the automobile.

Let's see now, we covered dog poop and horse apples. Now if we can just figure out how we can work in a post or two on kitty litter we will have a trifecta!

Kitty litter provides great traction on an icy incline, provided one doesn't have sand or salt. I opt for sand or salt, using kitty litter would mean having a cat and that ain't gonna happen anytime soon.

I tried to attatch an image to this thread but I get "invalid image type". The image that I am trying to attatch is a jpg. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Asterix, I just tried a test with a .jpg, size 91KB, and it worked ok. Try a test with another .jpg file...something small in size...say <50 KB in size and see if that works.
