Letter to the Editor in the Aug. 17, 2010, issue:
I attended another of the wonderful plays at the Northern Lights Playhouse in Hazelhurst. What started out as an upbeat musical “All Shook Up” turned into a display of the spirited enthusiasm and talent of the young professional actors as the weather went from rain to wind to heavy rain. At one point the play was halted to allow the rain to subside so we could hear the dialogue and music. The actors used this as an opportunity to ad lib, keeping us all entertained during the heaviest rain. The play progressed till the last few minutes when the power went out. Without missing a beat, the actors continued their performance being lit by a couple of flashlights and cell phones. They finished the play and then assisted us out to our cars in the heavy rain using umbrellas and flashlights to get us safely to our cars. What could have been an unpleasant experience turned into a delightful evening showcasing the personalities of the performers.
Like many businesses that depend on tourism in our area, Northern Lights has struggled to keep going, especially after the fire that burned down the actors’ residence. I strongly recommend taking in one of these plays, not only for your own enjoyment, but to support the arts in our area. It would be such a shame to lose this gem of the Northwoods.
