Replace ‘R-word’ with ‘Respect’

Postby Tomahawk Leader » Wed Apr 28, 2010 12:18 am

Appeared in the April 27, 2010, Tomahawk Leader with pictures of Tomahawk students who have taken the pledge:

Young people around the world, including many in the Tomahawk School District, are taking a stand and raising awareness of the dehumanizing and hurtful affects of the words “retard” and “retarded” and are helping encourage others to think before they speak. They ask that you help the Special Olympics organization change the conversation by helping to eliminate the demeaning use of the R-word and replace it with “respect.” This will help create a more accepting world for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and all those people who may appear different, but have unique gifts and talents to share with the world. A recent day of awareness was held, with hopes that 100,000 pledges would be reached. That goal has been surpassed! (A look today at the site show 130,000-plus pledges.)

Locally, Special Olympians sold t-shirts and supporters proudly wore them recently to show support for the campaign. To learn more, visit and make a pledge not to use the R-word.
