Ending domestic violence

Postby Tomahawk Leader » Wed Jan 09, 2008 7:45 pm

A Letter in the Jan. 8, 2008, Tomahawk Leader

To the Editor:

When you consider that last year almost 500 people in Lincoln County sought help from HAVEN because of domestic abuse, attaining the goal of ending domestic violence seems overwhelming. Not everyone who comes to HAVEN reports their abuse to law enforcement, and not everyone who reports to law enforcement comes to HAVEN. So any data provided regarding the numbers of domestic abuse assaults in Lincoln County are not true numbers. In addition, think of the family members, friends, employers who are affected by these assaults. This is a community issue which affects the majority of Lincoln County.

Domestic violence affects us all. Whether it’s the neighbors who argue and fight in the wee hours of the morning or the middle of the afternoon, the co-worker who calls in sick all the time, or the customer who comes in with bruises now and again, we’ve all seen it. In these day to day situations, it’s hard to know what to do to end the violence. Calling the police department seems extreme. Talking to the person may be seen as invading their privacy or family business.

Contributing to HAVEN, being a member of the Coordinated Crisis Response Team, attending informational meetings and reading articles like this in the paper are a good start toward ending domestic violence. However, helping someone you know and suspect is a victim of domestic violence is much harder and more important. Calling HAVEN is one of the best ways to end domestic violence in Lincoln County. If you suspect someone is being abused, call HAVEN at 536-1300. They can help you figure out the best way to help victims of domestic violence.
