Shirley M. Sutherland, age 94, of Tomahawk, passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2020, at Pine Crest Nursing Home in Merrill, Wis. Shirley was born in Tomahawk on June 1, 1926, to the late William and Julia (Wesley) Obey. She was married to Arnold “Red” Sutherland on April 23, 1949; he passed away in 1999.

Shirley attended school in Rhinelander, Wis. Her family later moved to Ely, Minn., to begin logging. After marriage, Shirley and Red moved back to Tomahawk, where they raised five children. Shirley was a loving mother and devoted homemaker who enjoyed gardening, house plants, camping, pontoon rides, and snowmobiling. She looked forward to sturgeon fishing in Flambeau and was fortunate to have spent a summer fishing in Alaska. Shirley was a Pekingese lover who, over the years, had owned and spoiled several.

Survivors include her son, Richard (Maureen) Sutherland, of Tomahawk; two daughters, Kay (Carl Christianson) Jorgensen, of Tomahawk, and Sue (Ralph) Schneider, of Hartland, Wis. Shirley is further survived by her grandchildren, Sarah Sutherland and Jamie (Reid Berg) Jorgensen, and her great-grandchildren, Trayvon, Chase, Damon, and Donovan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Julia; her son, James Sutherland; her Daughter, Julie Sutherland; and her siblings, Norman, Gordon, and Phyllis.

A private graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery. Generations Funeral Home & Crematory, Tomahawk, is assisting the family. View Shirley’s obituary and leave online condolences at www.generationsfuneral.com.
