For the Tomahawk Leader

TOMAHAWK – The Tomahawk Hatchets’ combined varsity/JV girls’ basketball team won a trio of games last week.

The team kicked off the week on Monday, Feb. 1, defeating Antigo’s JV squad in Tomahawk 33 to 27.

“Emily Maki and Haley Liebelt both scored ten points, and they both grabbed 10 rebounds,” said head coach Dean Borcherding. “We survived to win. We had a decent lead, but we can’t have four girls foul out when we have only ten players. Playing aggressive defense is great, but playing smart is better.”

The Hatchets’ combined squad followed up the home win with another, earning a 33 to 22 win over Rib Lake’s varsity team on Tuesday, Feb. 2.

“Khianna Vacho was our scoring leader, and Ella Genelin had 12 rebounds,” Borcherding stated. “Vacho and fellow freshmen Maddie List and Bella Marino are having many learning and productive minutes, which will benefit them and our program in the near future.”

Tomahawk’s combined team wrapped up the week with its third consecutive win on Friday, Feb. 5, traveling to Park Falls and taking down Chequamegon 33 to 20.

“Ella Genlin scored 10 points, while Emily Maki and Khianna Vacho both chipped in six,” Borcherding said after the game. “(We played) better defense tonight, minor foul trouble and our girls held them to seven second half points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer.”
