National Groundwater Awareness Week: LCHD reminds residents to ‘know your H20’

For the Tomahawk Leader

LINCOLN COUNTY – As part of National Groundwater Awareness Week (March 7 through 13), the Lincoln County Health Department (LCHD) is reminding well owners to test their well water every year to prevent sickness caused by bad water.

“Life as we know it would be impossible without groundwater,” LCHD stated. “It is the world’s most used natural resource and supports our lives.”

Around 70% of Wisconsinites use groundwater for drinking.

“Water systems must deliver safe and reliable drinking water continuously,” LCHD said. “One of the most important steps to ensuring a safe drinking water source is regular testing.”

LCHD noted that without testing, people who rely on groundwater for drinking would be at risk of sickness, and recommended testing for coliform bacteria yearly.

“The only way to know what is in your water is to test,” said Meghan Williams, LCHD Environmental Health Specialist. “Spring is the perfect time to test your well water.”

“You may also consider testing your well for nitrates,” LCHD stated. “You may be more prone to high nitrates in your water if you live by an area where fertilizers are made or handled, by an animal feedlot, or close to a manure storage area. Nitrates are especially a concern if you are pregnant, may become pregnant, or if an infant will be drinking the water. All well owners should test their water if you notice a change in color, odor, or taste. Even if your water looks, tastes and smells good, it can contain bacteria and viruses. Knowing what is in your drinking water allows you to take steps to protect your family.”

For those with private wells, LCHD recommends:

  • Having your water tested each year
  • Staying up to date on the cleaning and inspection of your septic system
  • Keeping toxins, septic tanks, and animal waste away from your well
  • Getting rid of chemicals and motor oil properly
  • Avoiding putting waste chemicals in your septic system
  • Keeping your well records in a safe place

LCHD has a certified water lab for testing drinking water. Special sampling bottles that must be used for water testing can be picked up at the Lincoln County Health Department, 607 N. Sales St., Suite 101, Merrill, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Water samples should be taken the same day as they are brought in for testing. Samples can be dropped off at LCHD Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
