Oneida County Sheriff’s Sergeant killed in ATV accident

ONEIDA COUNTY – An off-duty Oneida County Sheriff’s Sergeant was killed in an ATV accident in Iron County on Saturday, May 29.
The Iron County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday, May 30 issued a press release regarding the incident, and the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a Facebook post that Sergeant Anton “Archie” Keelin, 36, of Hazelhurst, was the victim in the crash.
According to the release, the Iron County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at about 7:55 p.m. reporting the crash on Trail 17 at Riverside Drive in the Town of Oma. CPR was being performed on Keelin when emergency personnel arrived on the scene seven minutes later. Lifesaving efforts continued during transport and upon arrival at Aspirus Hospital in Ironwood, Mich., but Keelin was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Iron County Sheriff Paul W. Samardich said Keelin had been traveling north when his ATV appeared to have struck an object. Keelin was ejected from the ATV and struck a tree.
“Although traveling in a group, the crash was unwitnessed,” the release stated.
The Iron County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are investigating the incident.
