TOMAHAWK – Tomahawk is one step closer to seeing a big top circus come to town, as well as the return of a longstanding tradition.

The city’s Health and Safety Committee approved permit applications for the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus and the Fall Ride Thunder Parade during its meeting on Wednesday, June 30.

Both permits will need the City of Tomahawk Common Council’s final OK. The council is set to vote on the permits on Tuesday, July 6.

The Culpepper & Merriweather circus would be held from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 19 at the SARA Park soccer fields. An estimated 500 people would be in attendance, according to the permit. Food concessions would be available, but there would be no alcohol sales.

The Culpepper & Merriweather circus came to Tomahawk back in 2018, featuring its classic big top tent, clowns, acrobats, unicyclists, a high-wire performer, a lion, tigers and more.

The Thunder Parade, sponsored by Tomahawk Main Street, Inc., would take place during the Tomahawk Veterans Fall Ride on Friday, Sept. 17. Participants would gather along Kings Road at 5 p.m. before winding their way through Tomahawk-area backroads and cruising down W. Wisconsin Ave. The parade would end at the 100 block of S. Tomahawk Ave.

As many as 1,000 motorcycles have taken part in the parade in years past.
