RHINELANDER – The Learning in Retirement (LIR) program at Nicolet College will return to some in-person classes this fall and early winter with upcoming classes covering more than 30 different topics.

“Over the past year we heard time and again how people missed getting together for classes,” said Brenda Peltier, Nicolet LIR coordinator. “They missed that social aspect but they also understood why we couldn’t see each other in person because of the pandemic. Now that we have a COVID vaccine and more and more people are getting vaccinated, we’ve decided to bring back some in-person classes that follow Nicolet’s COVID guidelines.”

Due to the recent increase in cases in the Northwoods, Nicolet has returned to requiring face masks that cover the nose and mouth when inside all Nicolet buildings. This applies to students, staff and the general public. Appropriate physical distancing is also required when indoors.

Individuals outside on campus grounds are encouraged to wear masks while in a crowded area that cannot support proper physical distancing.

For classes that meet virtually online, members will have a link emailed to them before the start of class.

New upcoming class offerings cover the gamut from working with therapy dogs, Women in the Media, and Getting Smarter with Smartphones to a Travelogue of South Africa and The Seven Generations and The Seven Grandfather Teachings, along with many others.

Many long-time favorites will also return. These include Ced’s Nature Series, TED Talks, Current Events, ArtStart exhibits, and What We’re Reading Now.

For those who enjoying physical activity, offerings include Beginning Line Dancing for Seniors, Chair Yoga, and the Sole Mates series, where members get together to hike local scenic trails.

Some classes will meet only once for a couple of hours while others will be part of a series that meet once a week over several weeks.

Currently about 200 members from throughout the Northwoods belong to LIR. Annual membership is $45 and runs from July 1 to June 30 of the following year. Members can join at any time during the year and take as many or as few classes as they desire.
